Scandinavian drinking tankard with exceptionally beautiful painting, origin: Dalarna, Sweden, circa 1800, incised with Farmer’s Marks on Bottom: JH / SH
The word “tankard” originally referred to any wooden vessel as early as the 13th century and later came to mean a drinking vessel. The earliest tankards were made of wooden staves, similar to a barrel, and did not have lids.
The hand-painting on this piece is of exceptional detail and quality.
