The brothers Egbert and Anton Brink, both metal casters by profession founded Brink en van Keulen in 1946, together with Marinus Leendert van Keulen. They had a workshop on the Koudehorn in Haarlem. At the request and idea of Canneman, chief architect at the Department for the Preservation of Monuments and Historic Buildings, the company specialised in producing brass chandeliers, manufacturing replicas of old Dutch crowns and restoring old crowns. Anton Brink’s son, Willem also worked within the company for many years, learning the trade from his father. Succeeded by his daughter Sabine, the third generation of the Brink family business.

Commanding yet refined, the two-tier Brink 1953.18 chandelier modernizes 19th century elegance with 18 gracefully arched brass arms. At an imposing 100cm high and wide, the hollow brass fixture features delicate curling embellishments bordering each tier. Designed in an era of ornamental metalwork, this striking chandelier is now wired for contemporary use. With its hand-crafted details and decadent glow, the Brink 1953.18 immerses modern spaces in old world grandeur. Equally bold in presence yet graceful in form, this chandelier epitomizes the finesse of Dutch lighting design.

Original historical moulds from the era are utilised to create the brass components. Additionally, casting is still done the old-fashioned way in a greasy type of sand called Brussels’ soil. After the crown has been varnished, skilled artisans assemble the components. Electric crowns have bent hollow brass tubes for the arms. The arms and curls are soldered together. While the crowns are being put together, the electrical wiring and lighting components are covertly inserted.

Brink & van Keulen, a family-owned business founded in 1946, upholds the art of casting by producing the highest calibre brass chandeliers. Chandeliers by Brink and van Keulen can be found in a number of prestigious churches and monumental buildings in the Netherlands and other parts of the world. Through the transmission of knowledge through many generations, Brink & van Keulen has substantially aided in the preservation of the Dutch yellow casting craft. The business is the sole manufacturer of chandeliers using original casting moulds from the 17th century in all of Europe.

Johannes Vermeer (1632 – 1675) painted many Dutch interiors in addition to his famous “Girl with a Pearl Earring”. In the painting “”The Art of Painting”” a beautiful golden chandelier is displayed above the painter and his subject. Dutch historians have noted that such chandeliers permitted artists to demonstrate their expertise at rendering shimmering and refractive brass under changing light conditions. A true testament to their craft and artistry.

The aesthetic brilliance of Dutch lighting design from the 19th century is best exemplified by this imposing two-tier Vermeer 119 chandelier. Each of the two 82cm broad stages is illuminated by eighteen beautifully curving arms that were exquisitely crafted from hollow brass. Each circular tier’s frame is embellished with intricate tendrils of scrolling metalwork that join at a pendant that has been sculptured in the centre. This showpiece, which towers 80 cm high, is electrically wired in for the present day. The polished brass glows softly, evoking memories of Holland’s bygone Golden Age, when opulent pendants adorned aristocratic manors all over Europe.
