Four 18th Century Framed Ceramic Delft Tiles Frisian Rose Manganese, circa 1760

These are four matching delft earthenware tiles, all with a manganese Frisian Rose pattern and located in a hardwood frame, the tiles made in the Netherlands during the 18th century, circa 1760.

The tiles are nominally 5 inches square and 5/16 inches thick. The frame is made of a hardwood and is 11.5 inches square by 5/8 inch thick.

All four tiles are individually hand painted with very similar but different patterns featuring a rose on a stem with two leaves. This decoration is known as “Frisian Rose” pattern after the Friesland area of production and were probably made in the towns of either Harlingen or Makkum.

Notes: On delft tiles
In the second half of the 17th century, the city of delft became the centre of production for high-quality tin glazed earthenware. The earthenware industry disappeared from most Dutch cities, though tile factories managed to survive in Rotterdam, Amsterdam, and Utrecht. Tile and plate production continued in the northern province of Friesland, more specifically in the towns of Harlingen and Makkum.

A French Directoire period framed painted panel from the late 18th century, with floral motifs. Born in France during the later years of the 18th century, this exquisite decorative panel features a lovely bouquet of flowers, displayed in a humble rattan basket, hanging from two majestic acanthus accented scrolls, ribbon-tied in the center. Featuring a delicate palette of blue grey, white, pink and golden tones standing out beautifully on a neutral background, the panel is adorned with a gilded frame, decorated with delicate beads. Hand Painted Prattware Plaque Showing a Pair of Lions, Made England, circa 1800

A pair of lions resting comfortably on a Prattware plaque. They probably just finished a big meal! Hand painted in three brown shades: their bodies are painted light brown, their manes, and tails a darker brown, and their muzzles an almost black, midnight brown. The brushwork is intentionally prominent. The effect is splendid!
As is the case with the lions on this plaque, Prattware has raised decoration colored with underglaze oxides.

Background of Prattware:
Prattware is a pottery style made in the late 18th and early 19th centuries by over 20 English and Scottish factories. It takes its name from the Pratt family of Staffordshire potters. But many other British factories in Staffordshire, Yorkshire, Liverpool, Sunderland, and Scotland made this type of pottery. Prattware always consists of pearled creamware decorated with figures or decorations in relief, fired at high temperature, with oxides painted under the glaze.
