Born on the Island of Java in the early years of the 20th century, this Dutch Colonial desk features a rectangular top sitting above an apron presenting a single drawer. The table is raised on four elegant turned legs resting on turnip style feet. This is a very good French mahogany Directoire desk with bronze ormolu and restrained and simple design. The leather top is in good antique condition with some signs of age and use but nothing crazy or horrid. The desk is a faux partners desk with drawers on one side and faux drawers on the other. Measure 52 wide x 28 deep x 30 tall and when both trays are open 80.75 wide. Dates to the 1930s.

To better understand the Directoire style of this desk
Directoire style was a period in the decorative arts, fashion, and especially furniture design in France concurrent with the Directory (November 2, 1795–November 10, 1799), the later part of the French Revolution. The style uses Neoclassical architectural forms, minimal carving, planar expanses of highly grained veneers, and applied decorative painting. It is a style transitional between Louis XVI and Empire.

The Directoire style was primarily established by the architects and designers Charles Percier (1764–1838) and Pier François Léonard Fontaine (1762–1853). In its use of Neoclassical architectural form and decorative motifs the style anticipates the slightly later and more elaborate Empire style, which was introduced after Napoleon established the First French Empire.

The Directoire style reflected the Revolutionary belief in the values of republican Rome:

“The stoic virtues of Republican Rome were upheld as standards not merely for the arts but also for political behaviour and private morality. Conventionels saw themselves as antique heroes. Children were named after Brutus, Solon and Lycurgus. The festivals of the Revolution were staged by Jacques-Louis David as antique rituals. Even the chairs in which the committee of Salut Publique sat were made on antique models devised by David…. In fact Neo-classicism became fashionable.

This outstanding large executive desk was made by Francois Linke of France. The locks are all signed “Linke” and as many know if a lock is signed Linke, its Linke. The desk is fine condition with crips bronze ormolu and incredible flame mahogany panels and surmounted with bronze on top of the leather desk surface. The brown desk surface is a rich deep brown and embossed too. The desk measures 71 wide x 35 deep x 29.5 tall with a 24 inch kneehole.
