Antique French Directoire style Settee ~ Canape is ideal for a light and airy look, with a minimal footprint for more cozy seating arrangements. The rich coloration of the solid sycamore framework is offset by the openness of the seatback and armrest framework, which combines a comfortably curved top rim supported by sturdy cornerposts and vertical slats all around. The seat is perfect for two, and is upholstered in very serviceable, durable fabric. A single tier of ebonized molding provides a nice bordering effect. Gracefully splayed legs provide sturdy support. Ideal in front of a window, in the middle of a room, or anywhere a comfortable, lightweight seat for two is needed!

losses to frame. Well worn paint and gilded finish. Oxidation to the gilt. Chipping, age dings . Slight warpage to back crest rail see photo 17 . sturdy .

Provenance by repute: Elise de Wolfe (Lady Mendl). Irwin J. Smith of Rockwood, TN attended New York School of Art (now Parsons) in 1920s, falling into the social circle of Elsie de Wolfe and Elisabeth Marbury. Some years and success later Mr. Smith touring Europe dropped in on an old acquatience Lady Mendel (de Wolfe) at her home Villa Trianon outside of Paris, thus the sale of items and shipping to Pittsburgh. Now by inheritance and descent.

Early 20th Century French Directoire Style Painted Ash Banquette, Settee

This French Directoire style banquette from the turn of the twentieth century features a scrolled seat back detailed with a carved central rosette flanked by palmettes within a classic diamond shape. The seat back is additionally detailed with carvings of scrolling acanthus leaves, palmettes, and beading. The caned seat rests on tapered fluted legs in the form of quivers of arrows. Rosettes adorn the die joints and scrolling leaves and flowers decorate the apron. The armrests are supported on striated plinths and are detailed with flowers and beading. A removable seat cover allows one to either protect the caned seat or reveal its woven geometric pattern. Painted in a pale green, this banquette would be an elegant addition to a covered or garden room. c. 1900.

Vintage French Os de Mouton (French for sheep’s bone) referring to the shape of the lower frame of this settee. The style of Os de mouton has been popular since the time of Louis XIV and are still being made today throughout the world. This vintage French settee probably dates to the first half of the 20th c. Difficult to say whether or not this French settee was constructed during the 1930’s or ? The condition is certainly usable as is until one replaces the old French fabric. Priced accordingly.
