(View of the island, and the roadstead of St. Iago. Drawn by Johann Christian Friderci / Depiction of the inhabitants on St Iago)

?Porto Praia, Cape Verde, 1783.

Watercolour with ruled black ink border on laid paper, watermarked Pro Patria with Maid of Dort,
H. 29. 5 x W. 120.5 cm

The largest recorded early modern panoramic view of Cape Verde, by “the best VOC map maker in South Africa” (Koeman). This is his earliest known work.

Santiago’s Porto Praia is the main harbour of Cape Verde. It served as an important transportation hub for enslaved African people to the Americas and for the restocking of ships bound for the Cape with salt and fresh foods. These two functions of the island are depicted in the cartouche in the top right. It shows an African family and examples of livestock: a turkey and a goat. The man wears clothes that are also seen in depictions of plantation guards in the West Indies of the same period.

This is an authentic antique map of Peloponnese or the Morea peninsula by Jan Jansson. The map was published in Jansson’s “Atlantis majoris” in Amsterdam, circa 1660.

This striking map shows southern Greece from Thebes and Athens in the north, to the southern coast of Peloponnese and includes several islands surrounding the massive peninsula. Rivers, forests, cities, and villages are noted throughout and regional borders within Peloponnese are delineated.

Decorative elements include several ships, some of which appear in battle and decorative cartouches.

The condition is excellent so far as I can see, there will naturally be age related patina, it looks to be a hand watercolour piece.

(3) De Apocryphe boecken: dat zijn boecken die der heylige schrifture niet en worden gelijck gehouden ende nochtans nut ende goet zijn om te lezen.
Amsterdam, Rieuwert Dircksz. van Baardt, 1648.

4 parts in 1 volume. Folio. With a full-page portrait of Martin Luther engraved by C. J. Visscher after François Steurhelt as a frontispiece, an engraved general title-page by Frans Brun (or Fransz Brunen) after Crispijn de Passe, a full-page portrait of Adolf Visscher engraved by Zacharias Webber after I. Suijderhoef, 6 folding double-page engraved maps, 6 double-page engraved plates showing a total of 96 biblical scenes (16 scenes per plate) printed by Frederick de Witt and engraved by Cornelis Danckerts after Mattheüs Merian, and an elaborate engraved tail-piece by Crispijn de Passe, dated 1648, on G2v (of the preliminaries). With three divisional typographical title-pages for the prophets, Biblical apocrypha and the New Testament, including Van Baardt’s detailed woodcut vignette, decorated woodcut initials (at least 3 series) and ornamental woodcut tail-pieces. Contemporary richly blind-tooled calf over wooden boards, sewn on 7 supports with corresponding raised bands on the spine, with large brass clasps, catch plates and corner-pieces on both boards, red edges. Both boards show a large ornamental lozenge centrepiece within a multiple fillet frame (both thin and thick lines) with four small triple-acorn corner-pieces in the innermost frame. The edges on the inside of the boards are bevelled.

First edition of this beautifully illustrated Dutch translation of the influential Luther Bible, with the engraved title-page, all plates and a large tailpiece expertly contemporary hand-coloured and strikingly highlighted in gold. This edition, published by (the widow of) Van Baardt, is also known as the “Visscher bible”, after its translator. It is certain that Visscher based his translation on Luther’s original bible and the two known Dutch translations: the “Lotter bible” by Bugenhagen (1554) and the “Biestkens bible” (1560). Apparently, Visscher did not use the new and by then already renowned Dutch States translation (commissioned during the Synod of Dordrecht in 1618-1619) and did not want to change Luther’s original translation, which unfortunately resulted in a difficult to read work. Nevertheless, this became the standard Bible of the Dutch Lutherans. (Darlow & Moule).

The present work was printed by Rieuwert Dircksz van Baardt (1599-1648) – according to I.H. van Eeghen – at the presses of Lodewijk III Elsevier (1604-1670). The work was published after Van Baardt’s death by his widow and was illustrated with engraved maps by Nicolaes Visscher (1618-1679) after his father Claes Jansz. Visscher (1587-1652) and a complete series of Mattheüs Merian the Elder’s (1593-1650) reduced scenes engraved by Cornelis Danckerts (1603-1656) and printed by Frederik de Wit (1630-1706) in Amsterdam. These two sets of engraved plates were published separately for the purpose of being added to Bibles such as the present one, or the Dutch States Bible for example. The illustrations are expertly hand-coloured and all highlighted in gold.

With the small bookplate of Jan Willem Six de Vromade (1872-1936): “Ex bibliotheca J.W. Six” on the front paste-down. The binding shows very slight signs of wear, mainly around the spine, minor foxing and spotting throughout, mainly to the outer margins, with a ca. 4 cm tear in the foot margin of leaves a5 and a6 in the New Testament, without loss but slightly affecting the text, the last ca. 10% of the leaves show a very small (to max. ca. 1 cm in the last few leaves) wormhole in the gutter margin, barely affecting the commentary but not the main text.
Otherwise in very good condition.

Place / Date: Dordrecht, Abraham Blussé, 1766-1799
Size: 38 parts in 21 volumes.

Large 4to. With more than 1100 hand-coloured engraved plates, 10 maps, 1 folding engraved table, and an engraved portrait of Buffon (by Houbraken, with an extra-added uncoloured portrait pasted on the verso). Contemporary, uniform half tanned sheepskin.

Finely hand-coloured copy of the 1766-1799 Netherlands edition (in French) of Buffon’s justly famous Histoire naturelle, the complete first series, covering the formation of the earth, humans, mammalian quadrupeds and apes, reptiles and amphibians, birds, fishes and even minerals, also describing the royal collection of Louis XV. Buffon’s work presents ”for the first time a complete survey of natural history in popular form” (PMM).

The present set, in the works rarest and most expensive form, is exquisite. The subscription notices periodically mention copies printed on fine paper, but they do not mention hand-coloured copies. Landwehr, discussing the first Dutch-language edition (no. 46, by the same publisher) cites contemporary sources referring to four forms of publication: on regular paper, on large paper, with hand-coloured plates and (most expensive of all) with hand-coloured plates and vignettes.
Buffon opens the first volume with an essay called “Théorie de la terre”, where “for the first time he outlines a satisfactory account of the history of our globe and of its development as a fitting home for living things. In his view the earth had been originally part of the sun which was broken off by the impact of a comet. It gradually condensed from its gaseous state, and the forces shaping its continents and mountains are still active” (PMM).

From his exhaustive research for the Histoire naturelle des quadrupèdes, Buffon came to the conclusion that it was necessary to reintroduce the notion of family. Breaking with the spirit of his time, Buffon attempted to separate science from metaphysical and religious ideas. As a disciple of Locke he denied idealistic metaphysics, stating that mental abstractions can never become principles of either existence or real knowledge; these can come only as the results of sensation” (DSB).

Buffon did not believe in the fixity of species but proposed that nature is constantly changing. For instance, in the case of quadrupeds he stated that there were 38 basic types that degenerated over the centuries. According to Buffon, the monkey is a degenerated man, the ass a degenerated horse. His interest in the precise connection between groups of animals that are obviously related prompted Buffon to devote much attention to comparative anatomy in the Histoire naturelle. He also stressed the importance of the study of earth sciences for botany and zoology. “Life and animation, instead of being a metaphysical point in being, is a physical property of matter” (DSB). Buffon’s views on the origin and development of species and the history of the earth show how he tried to describe natural phenomena by means of science, discarding metaphysical and religious explanations. “He was the first to create an autonomous science, free of any theological influence … [and] establish[ed] the intellectual framework within which most naturalists up to Darwin worked” (DSB).

Buffon was assisted by the anatomist Louis Daubenton and others, and the final volumes were completed after his death under the direction of Comte de Lacépède.
With the owners name “Sir G[eorge]. Murray” (1772-1846) on the half-title of most volumes. He was a Scottish soldier from a noble family, who served in Flanders, the West Indies, Egypt and elsewhere, eventually becoming quarter master general of Wellingtons staff in Spain and Portugal and reaching the rank of General. He was Knighted in 1813, held governorships of several colonies and the military college at Sandhurst, along with leading posts at the Colonial Office (where he helped establish the colony of Western Australia) and served from 1823 as a member of the British parliament. With the bookplate of the German entrepreneur and bibliophile Hans Dedi (1918-2016). Lacking a few half-titles (for example in the bird volumes 1 and 2), but otherwise in very good condition (most of the plates fine), with occasional stains and spots, a few tears and repairs, the binding also with some minor wear and repairs.

A splendid copy of a seminal monument of natural history.

Histoire de la navigation … aux Indes Orientales … Avec annotations de B. Paludanus, … Troixiesme edition augmentee.

LINSCHOTEN, Jan Huyghen van. Le grand routier de mer, …
[LINSCHOTEN, Jan Huygen van]. Description de l’Amerique & des parties d’icelle, …
Amsterdam, Evert Cloppenburg, 1638. Folio (32.5 x 21 cm). With 3 title pages (2 from the same full-page engraving and 1 letterpress with an engraving of a ship in a cartouche with 4 inset city views), a nearly full-page engraved portrait of the author in a cartouche with 4 inset views, 42 engraved plates including 6 maps (31 double-page & 11 larger folding). All plates are colored by a contemporary hand. Near contemporary mottled calf, gold-tooled spine. [8], 206 pp.; [4], 181, [1 blank]; [1], [1 blank], “86” [= 80], [2 blank] pp.

A hand-colored copy of the third French edition of Linschoten’s classic illustrated guide for travelers to the East and West Indies, termed by Lach ”the most important of the first-hand accounts published independently of the great travel collections” (I.198). No other book contained so much useful intelligence on the East and West Indies. Unhindered by the censorship that constrained writers from the Iberian peninsula (details of seas and coasts in Asia and the Americas were military secrets), he included such information as sailing directions, physical descriptions of countries, and statistics on commerce and trade. The work was held in such high regard that for nearly a century, every Dutch ship sailing to Africa and Asia carried a copy of a Dutch edition of Linschoten. The 42 plates (11 large folding) are especially noteworthy, including 6 maps and several bird’s-eye views, many with coats of arms of the regions shown and of the colonial powers that controlled parts of them.
Although the work contains a valuable survey of the New World, the material on India and the East Indies is the most valuable, being the fruit of the author’s observation. In the service of the Portuguese, Linschoten spent five years in Goa (1583-1588/89), making numerous visits to other parts of India. He was thoroughly immersed in Indian culture and the complex relations between the Portuguese colonial apparatus and indigenous peoples. Highlights include a first-hand description of the caste system, political structures, business practices of the Banyas, and exotic natural phenomena.
The text is divided into three parts. The first part covers the East Indies and East Africa, including regions as far east as Japan. The second describes the navigation along the coasts of West Africa around the Cape of Good Hope to Arabia, together with some coasts in the New World. The third book is devoted to North America, the Caribbean, and Brazil.

About 4 sheets were slightly browned and a few others with spots or minor foxing, a tear was repaired in the title page to part 3 (not affecting the text or engraving), one plate was cut and reattached at an early date and a few others show minor browning or small tears where the folds cross, the corner of one leaf torn off (without loss of text) and a few other minor marginal defects, but still generally in very good condition, with the coloring rich and in good condition. The boards are slightly rubbed and the head and foot of the spine are expertly restored, but the binding is still in good condition.

A seminal work on navigation to the East and West Indies that opened up exploration to explorers outside Spain and Portugal.

Originally from a church in Amsterdam. The enclosure would have been used by a noble family and probably had curtains for privacy and warmth.

The access is via a door on the right in the front. An interior bench seat runs the width of the space along the back door.
Tall enough for a tall adult to stand with room to spare.

Currently converted to a bar by a flat wood shelf covering the angled missal or prayer book ledge that runs along the front on the inside. The wood shelf extends along the sides and was designed for easy removal.

The piece breaks down into large sections for moving.

Used for lighting candles or placing statue of saint. Original green painted finish with exquisite patina. Made to be wall-mounted, but can be made to sit free-standing.

Note: Original/early finish on antique and vintage metal will include some, or all, of the following: patina, scaling, light rust, discoloration, and corrosion. Regional differences in humidity and climate during shipping may cause antique and vintage wood to shrink and/or split along its grain, veneer to loosen and/or peel, and painted finishes and gilt to crack and flake.
