Buffet / enfilade made of cherry wood that has been ebonized and partially veneered with black glass and mirror in a diamond pattern. There are four dovetailed drawers above four doors which open up to ample storage. The gilt bronze hardware and handles add a beautiful detail. This spectacular credenza is topped with an intact and original “brêche” marble top.

19th Century French Directoire Walnut Buffet / Server

Directoire buffet hand-made in Southern France in the mid 1800s using walnut. The buffet shows a three on two composition with three drawers on top of two doors. The drawers are inset and the fronts are composed of a flat panel framed in darker molding. The doors are also composed of flat panels framed by three layers of molding, creating beautiful depth in the, otherwise, very linear piece. The door panels also show a simple curvy line carving. Internally the buffet is divided in two area by a single shelf, providing plenty of storage space.
Overall this is a very cute and usable piece of furniture. Despite the simple overall lines, the buffet has a lot of depth, given by the hand-carving on the door panels, the fluting on the front corners and the presence of ebonized molding on the drawers and doors. The buffet is capacious and can provide storage for items used on a daily basis, but because of its decorations and overall look it can also just be used as a decorative piece where to hide all those items that do not have an official placement in the house (I doubt I am the only one with that problem!)

Pair of Matching Directoire Style Ebonized Buffets with Original Marble Tops

We were just sitting here, trying to remember the last time we had a genuine pair of matching Antique French Buffets, lets alone Directoire style French Buffets and in 25 years, we believe this is the only pair we have ever had for sale. The pair of Directoire style Buffets, came from a Chateau in the Loire Valley near the town of Tours. The Buffets were made in the late 1800’s in the style of Directoire and are Ebonized with gold detailing. Both Marble tops have seen prior restoration, but are an exquisite color.

Mahogany Buffet with Solid Bronze Accents Available in Any Dimension of Finish

Newly constructed buffet was made here in our in-store Old Plank Workshop. The buffet was handcrafted and built from mahogany, with solid bronze trim. The color was achieved utilizing an old school ebonize process, where we use iron acetate to slowly darken the mahogany. When you see the buffet in person, you’ll noticed that it is not quite black and some may actually describe it as coffee bean. We often see this on 19th century Napoleon III antique furniture when they arrive still in still in their original ebonized finish. The nicest feature of ebonizing, is that it allows for the beautiful grain of the mahogany to show through. Should you wish for a different finish, our color palette is virtually limitless.

Antique French Directoire buffet from a restaurant in the Rhone Valley. The buffet is in great condition and made of solid walnut that has been ebonized and finished with a French polish. We love the gilt brass trim and hardware; as well as bronze “sabots” front feet. It has three dovetailed drawers and adjustable solid planked shelving behind the panel doors.

Early 19th century French Directoire Period stripped oak buffet is an historically significant piece, recalling the period as France transitioned out of the Empire style into a more staid architecture and level of embellishment that realized the essence of classicism. Diagonal patterns cut into the panels and drawers are accentuated by the fine molded detail, fluting, and a pair of turned columns on each corner. Rosettes are artfully placed for accents, with stylish steel bale pulls and key guards as a finishing touch. Completely hand-crafted from solid old-growth oak for centuries of daily use! Note the heavy rough-cut plank construction of the back in the photos supplied.
