This all-handcrafted box and work of art into one is special for many reasons. First of all, there is the beauty of the design and the incredible workmanship. This box breathes nothing but quality, artistry and cultural history. For the makers to have incorporated a stunning and vibrant enamel plaque/picture into the lid of this box, makes it a rare and remarkable work of art and also the perfect display piece for collectors and connaisseurs. We think that this striking box was specially made for a ‘bleeker’ in Dutch colonial times in Indonesia. A ‘bleeker’ was a person who cleaned/bleached linnen and clothing in the days when soap and/or detergents were not available yet. The beautiful patina of this solid teak wood box makes the striking colors of the enamel picture stand out even more. This work of antique craftsmanship truly is of museum quality and condition and it can be used for all kinds of purposes. Again great value for money and worldwide delivery from our store to your door in just 4 days is complimentary.

The well shaped lances and buttons made of bone are in a beautiful contrast with the aged wood of the frame.
This centerpiece has retired quite some years ago but is still appealing enough to enchant a dull corner of any room, combining particularly well with midcentury design.

The outer rims and four bun feet ebony, with silver lockplate, ornaments and handles.

Measures: H 15.2 x W 25 x D 15.4 cm

Note:
About Vooght little is known. He was married to Elisabeth Mennes, their daughter, Katharina Helena, was baptized in 1704. Three years later Vooght presented another child for baptism; this time an illegitimate daughter he had fathered on (his slave?) Remia van Macassar. In 1707 Vooght became the standard-bearer for the Westzijdse Burgercompagnie. Just over a year later he is mentioned as “Burgher Sergeant and boss silversmith”. His widow Elisabeth Mennes, described as “bitterly Catholic” was later married to silversmith Jan van Cloon. She died in 1715. The exhibition of colonial silver held in Batavia in 1935 included two commemorative salvers bearing the maker’s mark DV, both dating from between 1705 and 1710.

Voor ene goede vrind / for a good friend [of mine]
daar staat mijn doos steeds open. / there stays my box always open
Maar niet voor alle man / but not for everyone/anyone
die op den bedel lopen. / who come to beg [“oi mate ‘ave some sniffin tobacco to share?”]
(basically greediness, straightforwardness, and/or cynicism which is considered to be a common trait of Dutch character).

Translation:
“Ik viste op vooren en vonde een baars”
I was fishing on minnow (or furrows – a long trench made by a plow) and found a Perch..

“Mijn doos staat open niet voor alleman die op den bedel loopen”
My box is open (but) not for anyone who is begging..

Jij viste op vo(o)ren en vande een baars
You were fishing upstream and caught a [common/European] perch

Mijn doos staat open niet voor alleman, die op den beitel lo(o)pen
My box remains/stays/is open not to everyone (not for just anybody) who [picks up and] raises the chisel.
(vooren and loopen are archaic infinitive forms of voren and lopen respectively)

Expanded:
Ik viste op vooren en vande een baars

‘vooren’ is the archaic spelling of ‘voorn’ (common roach)
(the most common fish in Dutch waters)

I was fishing for roach but caught a perch
“I have caught something worth much more than I was looking for”
(There is a lady depicted there, so it might symbolise “I have managed to find a woman who exceeded my expectations”)

Mijn doos staat open niet voor alleman, die op den bedel lopen.

lopen means ‘run’; bedel means ‘beggar’; oplopen = run up
My box stays/remains/is open [but] not for anyone (not for just any ordinary Joe) who comes up begging [for some sniffing tobacco]. Measure: 6″.

Sri Lanka, Kandy, 2nd half 17th century, the mounts later

The cabinet with a central drawer with hidden compartment and the top drawer divided into four compartments. The surface carved all-over with scrolling plants issuing fleshy lotus palmettes, and in addition the exterior of the doors with a pair of kinnaris, the top with a seated deity encircled by birds, the back with a central lotus rosette flanked by quadrupeds and birds, and lastly the sides with a serapendiya, bordered by narrow diaper kundi rakkan bands.

H. 29 x W. 32.5 x D. 23 cm

The richly decorated panels carved in differing degrees of relief reveal the skill of the Sinhalese craftsmen and the scrolls issuing a richness of flowers and fruits are indicative of the island’s vegetal abundance. Their stylization is result of a cross-fertilization of Dutch and Sinhalese decorative elements that appear on furniture, textiles and silver that later appeared across the Asian VOC territories. The mythical kinnaris, serapendiya and the kundi rakkan banding are typical forms of Sinhalese ornamentation, but not often seen on furniture for the Dutch. (Mediaeval Sinhalese Art, Ananda K. Coomaraswamy, Pantheon Books 1908).
For cabinets of similar form and decoration see: Furniture from Indonesia, Sri Lanka and India during the Dutch period, Jan Veenendaal, 1985 pl.25, 29 and 58. Comparable Sinhalese furniture and objects with related carved decoration can be found in the Royal Collection Trust (21610, 21611), the Museum of Fine Arts Boston (1993.29) and the British Museum (1943.0712.4).

Due to the form of this box, together with the date, the most likely place of production of this large size box is West Sumatra. To be exact the area around Padang, which has been a centre of silver and gold filigreework since at least the 18th century and even still is today. Tourists can buy silver trinkets such as miniature pieces of furniture, model houses and jewellery in the village of Kota Gadang near Bukittinggi, a former Dutch military outpost previously known as Fort de Kock. This ‘West Coast work’ is mentioned in many Dutch East Indies and Dutch probate inventories in the 18th century.
