This set of six mid-20th century French painted beechwood dining chairs or side chairs with their scrolled seat backs are classic Directoire in form and style. The turned front legs of the chairs taper down to ball feet, and the die joints are detailed with carved diamonds and a central flower. The rear legs gently curve back “en sabres”, or “like sabers” in English. The seats are upholstered in a blue fabric with a repeating diamond pattern. The clean, simple lines of these chairs lend a modern flare. c. 1940.
